Affirming Strategies for Working with Neurodiverse Clients

  • Family Counseling Service 70 South River Street Aurora, IL, 60506 United States (map)

Neurodiversity is a concept where neurological differences such as Autistic Spectrum, ADHD, Dyslexia, and others are to be recognized and respected as any other human variation (National Symposium on Neurodiversity, 2011). This presentation explains how a perspective of neurodiversity differs from a more traditional view of mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and other neurological differences, suggests ways in which a “client as expert” model can be used to make adaptations to the therapy environment to empower clients and increase clinical impact, and provides concrete strategies helping professionals can use to create an affirming environment for neurodiverse clients.
